Does anyone actually make any money off all those Google ads on their website?
Here’s what I found in the first 3 months moving from a traditional business to trying out Google AdSense.
Do you make any real money from it?
Yes and no. You probably won’t make a 6 figure income but you can make near passive income which, depending on your financial goals, is pretty valuable.
For example: a website on ‘Gluten free flour’ that returns $30-40 a month will return up to $480 a year. This won’t change your life!
However it also isn’t going to take much (if any) more work either. This means that once the page is working for you it will likely sit their year over year bringing you income. Just don’t do a site on ‘Latest tech tips’ or something that changes a lot if passive income is what you’re after.
If you can get 60 of these then you’re on $600 a week of near passive income. Again this isn’t the 6 figure salary that a lot of people are after but it either buys you a lifestyle or the freedom to pursue higher risk ventures without a regular freak out on how you’re going to eat.
What do you earn per click?
61% of whatever the advertiser paid for the click. E.g. if a particular ad had a cost per click (CPC) of $0.57 then you would earn 0.57 x 61% = $0.35 per click. You can get a feel for what a likely CPC would be by using the Google Keyword Planner.
What’s worked so far
My best success was a page that already had about 150 views a day on website and all I did was add the ads to it and it actually started working! Here’s the link if you’d like to see an example – Unlock iPhone Guide.
I’m now making new websites around different niches and seeing how it goes. e.g. I rewrote the same content and made a page specifically for listing the ads on. These are very small websites, about just one topic as opposed to a post on a larger site, but I’m hoping this will get some clicks.

How to make a little bit extra
I’ve just added Amazon product links to some of my websites to bring some extra cash in. No success yet but I’m pretty excited about this.
Basically if you link to a product on Amazon and someone clicks and buys you receive 4.1% of the sale price. This also isn’t going to make you a millionaire but also only takes a few moments to set up and adds to your overall profitability!
Is it for you?
When I started I already had a local iPhone repair business with steady numbers coming to the website each day so the AdSense doesn’t need to pay the bills from day one. I’ve found it pretty fun making lots of websites but i can also see that even the best case scenario doesn’t bring in the millions.
I’m a long term kind of guy though so I figure if I can do several a week over the next few years and build up the near passive income it might just become the 4 hour work week.
If you need cash now though you should probably look elsewhere unless you already have a lot of traffic to your site and you’re looking for a way to monetise it!
